A combination of five elements (air, earth, space, water, and fire) results in doshas namely vata, Kapha, and pitta. Each individual will have a different dominating Dosha determining his personality and health status. The natural balance between the three helps to achieve a healthy body.

Kapha is a combination of water as well as earth elements. It is involved in the material development of different types of tissue. Kapha is generally based in the chest area.

To balance your Kapha and have a healthy body one must do the following:

  1. Eat right foods.
  2. Exercise regularly.
  3. Be socially active.
  4. Always stay warm to avoid any lung issues.
  5. Detox your body regularly to remove congestion in the lungs.
  6. Keep the nasal passage clean and healthy.

Foods you can choose to balance your Kapha:

Before we see the Kapha Dosha diet plan , let us see the list of foods that helps to balance Kapha Dosha.

As Indians we have a carbohydrate based diet. Carbs not only help in giving energy and vigor to an individual but also help in proper hormonal secretions. Consume moderate GI cereals like whole grains, millets, oats, quinoa, barley and rice.

Any legume or dal or pulse is fine in moderate quantity. Nuts have a very good quality of fat that helps obesity related inflammation. Few seeds help in boosting immunity as well as to keep the lungs healthy. Omega 3 rich nuts like walnuts, brazil nuts, as well as almonds help keep up with the immunity. Include methi seeds, chia, flaxseeds as they will help in weight reduction.

Low fat dairy products are acceptable. Never consume any milk product or milk itself in raw form. Always boil and cook these foods before consumption. Yoghurt is a very good option to boost gut immunity.

White lean cuts like chicken, fish or turkey are acceptable. You can also have egg whites. Avoid red meat as it may worsen Kapha Dosha. Try and keep animal protein intake to a minimum.

Consume high fiber whole vegetables, leafy vegetables, all green vegetables. Try and incorporate at least 3 – 4 servings daily. Whole fruits with high fiber content help to clean Kapha Dosha. Consume apples, pears, watermelon, pomegranates, apricots, cranberries. Avoid sour fruits that aggravate Kapha.

Honey is not only an excellent option to reduce Kapha Dosha but also helps in weight loss by cutting down on calories from sugar. One teaspoon daily can be advised.

Kapha dominant individuals have less thirst sensation. Hence, having an ample source of liquids in diet is important. Liquids not only helps in excreting excess Kapha from the body, but also helps in weight loss. Consume warm soups, kadha, herb and spice teas or concoctions to keep the lungs safe and healthy. Keep sipping on these liquids through the day.

Minimize salt in the diet to avoid any congestion. Include tulsi, turmeric, pepper, ginger, cloves as well as cinnamon. These spices not only balance the Kapha Dosha but also boost gut immunity. Spices boost metabolism as well as aid in weight loss. Ginger and pepper are also useful in maintaining lung health.

Foods to avoid in Kapha Dosha diet plan:

Avoid all foods that aggravate Kapha in the body.

  • Cereals: Any refined cereal like Maida has to be discontinued. Avoid overcooked foods that will make you more sluggish. Limit consumption of rice.
  • Pulses: There is no such restriction on pulse consumption. Limit soybean intake to few times a week.

  • Junk and high calorie foods: Junk and high calorie foods leads to congestion, increases inflammation and leads to weight gain. Heavy creamy desserts or gravies are also a big no.

Kapha Dosha Diet Plan

Here is a 1 day sample chart of kapha dosha diet plan.

Empty stomach: 1 cup ginger honey tea or green smoothie (green leafy veggies + ginger + honey).

Breakfast: 1 cup green tea + 1 medium size low fat onion cauliflower paratha with 1 cup low fat curd OR 2 small size millet dosa with 1 cup sambar

Mid-morning: 1 fruit (100 – 150 gms – Apple, pomegranate, berries, pear)

Lunch: 1 cup Salad + 2 Multigrain chapatti or 1 cup Brown or Red Rice + 1 cup Green Vegetable + 1 cup Dal or Sprouts + 1 glass buttermilk.

Evening snack: 1 cup low fat curd + ½ cup multigrain and millet granola (sugar free) OR 1 cup vegetable poha + 1 cup curd OR 1 cup cinnamon tea + 2 Egg whites.

Dinner: 1 cup Vegetable Soup + 1 cup Khichdi  OR Vegetable Daliya + 1 cup Kadhi  OR Sambar + 1 cup Vegetable.

Bedtime: 1 cup warm water with tulsi drops or Tulsi turmeric and pepper concoction.

Exercise to Balance Kapha Dosha :

Kapha dominant individuals have a very good endurance capacity. Taking advantage of the characteristic a combination of cardio and resistance training is helpful to maintain health as well as to lose weight. The only concern here is to keep up with the novelty so boredom doesn’t set it.
