22 Months & Counting…

22 months and counting. That’s 660 days – give or take – that we’ve been swimming in the sewer soup that is the pandemic. Everyone is strung out, worn out, maxed out. So many activities, wants, hopes and dreams are sitting on the back burner that there isn’t an industrial -sized pot to hold it all. For many, sex is one of the things we’ve had to put on perma-hold, and that’s understandable. Stress, anxiety, depression, physical health concerns, inaccessibility to meeting new people or not having time and space away from live-in partners – any one of these can knock a libido down several or even all the notches.

While sex is something we certainly seek purely for pleasure, there are a lot of GREAT reasons to reconsider your priorities, especially right now. The icing on the cake is that you don’t need to rely on anyone but yourself to reap the following benefits:

-It can be a great stress-reliever, and that’s news we can all use RIGHT NOW. Orgasm releases endorphins, oxytocin (aka the love hormone) and other chemicals that help us to experience happiness and calm.

-Orgasm and even stimulation alone can block pain says Dr.Barry R. Komisaruk, PhD, a distinguished service professor at Rutgers University.

-Sex might be a contributor to a healthier immune system. We need updated studies, but research from 2004 noted that sexually active people take fewer sick days (clearly this was long before COVID-19, so ensure that you’re doing all you can to build your immunity and protect your health in proven ways).

-It’s certainly not the only way, but sex can help you connect (and reconnect) with yourself and/or your partner.  

-Sex is evolutionary. When was the last time you switched it up (and by “it”, I mean, positions, toys, role play, fantasy, erotica, etc.). Novelty is to satisfying sex as bubbles are to seltzer – absolutely essential.

-It can lead to a better night’s sleep, according to a study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. It also works in reverse – getting adequate rest can improve sexual response. A win-win, if I’ve ever heard one.
